The 2,000-pixel rule

Etsy asks for at least 2,000 pixels on the shortest side of your image. That number isn't about how the photo looks in search results — thumbnails are far smaller — it's about the zoom viewer. When a buyer clicks into your listing and zooms, Etsy serves your full-resolution file, and anything much below 2,000 px turns soft exactly at the moment the buyer is inspecting stitching, glaze, or fabric texture. Phone cameras have shot well above this resolution for a decade, so the fix is usually not a new camera — it's making sure your editing or export step isn't quietly shrinking files below the line.

The 1 MB trap

Here's the part that catches experienced sellers: a straight-off-the-phone photo is often 3–8 MB, and Etsy's uploader handles heavy files badly. Uploads crawl, hang, or fail without a clear error, and sellers blame their Wi-Fi. Etsy's own guidance is to keep files under 1 MB. The catch is that hitting 2,000 px and staying under 1 MB requires real JPEG compression — more than most photo apps apply by default. How Etsy crops your thumbnail

Search results and shop grids don't show your full photo — they show a landscape-leaning crop taken from the center of your image. If your product sits at the edge of the frame, or fills the frame corner to corner, the thumbnail can slice into it.
