eBay Photo Requirements (2026): the minimum that gets you listed, and the size that gets you paid

500 px gets you listed — 1600 px sells the item
eBay's rules have two tiers, and mixing them up costs money. The 500-pixel minimum is just the bar for the upload to succeed. The number that matters commercially is 1600 px, because that's where eBay switches on zoom — the magnifier buyers use to inspect condition. On a used-goods marketplace, condition is the product: scuffs, hallmarks, serial numbers, seams. A listing whose photos can't be zoomed reads as a listing with something to hide, and buyers move to the next result without being able to say why.
Why square wins on eBay
eBay's search results, app feeds, and promoted placements all favor a square tile. Upload a tall or wide photo and the display crops or letterboxes it depending on surface — meaning you don't control what the buyer first sees. A 1600 × 1600 square with the item centered shows the same everywhere. If your original is rectangular, padding it to a square (adding neutral margin, rather than cropping into the item) preserves the full product while giving eBay the shape it wants.
Keep it real — eBay's picture policy in one paragraph
Beyond dimensions, eBay requires photos to honestly represent the specific item for sale: no borrowed stock photos for used items, no heavy manipulation of the item's appearance, no added text or artwork over the image. Clean edits — cropping, straightening, background tidying, exposure — are fine. A resizing step that only changes dimensions and file weight, never the item itself, stays safely inside the policy.
The 24-photo batch problem
eBay listings support up to 24 photos, and serious resellers list dozens of items a week. That's hundreds of images to bring to spec by hand. Can I use my phone photos directly? Resolution-wise, yes — any modern phone shoots far above 1600 px. The usual problems are shape (phones shoot 4:3 or 16:9, not square) and weight (3–8 MB files), which is exactly what the preset fixes.
Does eBay compress my photos anyway? eBay re-processes uploads for its various display sizes, but it works from what you give it — starting from a sharp 1600 px square gives every derived size the best chance.
White background required? Recommended for the first photo in many categories (and required in some catalog contexts), and it consistently photographs condition most honestly. The preset's white padding gets you most of the way there.
